News and Mis-Information — Can You Believe What You See and Read?

It is pretty much impossible to gauge from what you read and see on TV, what is "truth," in your webmaster's opinion.  The sources many of us have depended upon for many years (The Enquirer, the New York Times, ABC, NBC, CBS, even CNN) are NOT uniformly dependable -- in fact, some of them are not dependable at all -- and have not been for many years.  >> More

Corporate Media

http://www.washingtonpost.com
The Washington Post
The Post seems to do more investigative and fearless reporting than others in this category
in fact, they may belong more to the preceding group (remember Woodward and Bernstein of Watergate fame?).  The Post will  email you the day's edition free, just for signing up.

http://www.nytimes.com
The New York Times

Certainly NOT "All the news that's fit to print" — like others in this category, their customers are their corporate owners and their advertisers, not us.  AND they sat on the story of Bush's illegal wire taps for a solid year.  Not always even-handed.  But some good articles, especially op-ed and science.

http://www.usatoday.com
USA Today

USA Today will email you daily also
and also free.  Each of these newspapers has a slightly different take on things.

http://www.enquirer.com
You be the judge.

More liberal than the Enquirer, but will cease publishing  soon...
 why are we not surprised?

Organizations and Issues

http://www.spanohio.org —  Single-Payer Action Network Ohio.  Single-payer means that one fund, administered by a non-profit government agency, would make payments for all medical services for everyone.  The 1500 health care insurance companies -- each making profits, and each with its own bureaucracy and rules -- would no longer be involved as a middle man.  Medicare is an example of a single-payer plan. Sign up to do your part to bring this program to Ohio!

http://worldcantwait.net  (to drive out the Bush regime).

http://www.americansunitedforchange.org —  they want a government that works for all of us (wow!)

http://www.aclu.org—The American Civil Liberties Union. (good to know they're there, what with all the phone bugging, etc.)

http://www.pfaw.org— People for the American Way.  Devoted to preserving the Constitution.

http://www.au.org— Americans United for Separation of Church and State.

http://www.fcaontheweb.org Finneytown Civic Association.  They usually host a "Candidates' Night" in October.

THE U.S. CONGRESS VOTES DATABASE

This fabulous site lets you browse every vote in the U.S. Congress since 1991!

http://www.lwv.org  and www.lwvcincinnati.org
League of Women Voters
They publish an awesome Directory of Public Officials for residents of Hamilton County.  It includes state and federal office holders, phone numbers, faxes, terms of office, emails and websites, as well as proper forms of address.  You can probably pick up a copy at the Public Library.

"Making democracy work" is the League's motto.  They cover some non-partisan information about candidates, issues, and elections, but often fail to give information that could help you decide who to vote for.  Look elsewhere for who is a right-to-lifer, who wants to teach "intelligent design" in science classes, etc.

Alternative Media

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/
The Huffington Post
"Delivering News and Opinion Since May 9, 2005"

An interesting and thought-provoking web newspaper put together by liberal commentator Arianna Huffington.

http://www.comedycentral.com/shows/the_daily_show/index.jhtml
The Comedy Channel: The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
This is where much of young America gets its news, and for good reason -- these people tell it like it is, and with humor too.  You can download programs from the site.  In Cincinnati, it airs at 11 pm, and is replayed earlier the next evening.

http://www.airamericaradio.com/
No longer available at 1360 AM (WSAI) -- you can only get it off the web or on satellite radio.  Want to let WSAI know how you feel about this?  Their business number is 686-8300.  It was nice while it lasted.

A breath of fresh air is Keith Olbermann, host of Countdown from 8-9 pm weekdays on, of all things, MSNBC.  Links to some of his more memorable commentaries are at http://www.truthout.com, in the media section.  The Nation magazine calls him a cross between Edward R. Murrow and Jon Stewart.
